Overview of Adoption from Liberia:
Liberia adoption by US Citizens is possible. Previously suspended, in 2015 the President of Liberia announced that the moratorium had been lifted. At present, there are only 5 US Adoption Service Providers that can help parents adopt a child from Liberia. These agencies can be found through a search: https://www.rainbowkids.com/adoption-agencies
Children Available for Adoption from Liberia:
The children live in orphanages. Most are ages 3-13 years of age. Both healthy children and children with special needs are in need of adoptive families. There are many sibling groups, and in some cases cousins, who should be adopted together.
Adoptive Parent Qualifications:
The Government of Liberia (GOL) requires adoption applicants to comply with the adopting family’s home study agency, their state or province of residence regulations, USCIS or Canadian immigration, Hague and Liberian government requirements for adoption. The age of adopting parents is of normal childbearing age related to the child with some flexibility allowed by the GOL. Length of marriage is flexible. If a couple is married, both spouses must adopt. Single woman and large families are considered, by the GOL.
Travel: Travel usually occurs about 12-18 months after acceptance of the referral. It is preferable for both parents to travel, though one may travel alone. Travel in-country includes court appearance and finalization of the adoption. Travel length is usually 3-4 weeks.
Timeline: There are many waiting children. Once dossier is complete a match can be made relatively quickly. Travel to finalize the adoption will then take place in 12-18 months.
