El Salvador
Adoption
Advocate for El Salvador
Overview
In 2005, only 16 adoptions were completed in El Salvador by US Citizens. However, that may be poised to change. El Salvador appears to be a country that is becoming more open to the idea of international adoption, and several adoption agencies are now offering programs there.

Children Available: There are infants, toddlers and school age children available. Waiting sibling groups are ready for placement.

Parent Qualifications: Couples must be married for at least 5 years. Couples between 25 and 45 are eligible to adopt children 6-months old and older. With each year over 45, an additional year is added the minimum age of the child. For example, couples aged 46 are eligible to adopt children 1 year and older. Singles may also adopt children using the age guidelines above. Two related children can be adopted at the same time.

Travel: One trip of approximately 2 weeks is required, with one parent needing to stay in-country the entire time.

Timeline: From dossier until referral is approximately 3-6 months. Travel will happen about a month after that time.
