| Overview |
South Korea has had an adoption program for over 50 years. There are rumors that the program may close within the next 5 years, but those are just rumors at this time. The reason for this rumor is that Korea truly would like to end international adoption and is strongly encouraging the populace of Korea to adopt their orphaned children.
At this time, however, Korea remains a rock-solid program. The children are placed in foster families at birth, received excellent medical care and a social background of the birthparents is available. In addition, Korea requires the very least amount of paperwork from adoptive families. For families that qualify, Korea is an excellent choice.
Children Available: Infants. Healthy babies are referred to a family when they are only 5-6 months of age. It then may be many months before the child actually comes home. The wait to be assigned a healthy child may be more than one year. Special needs children often have very minor special needs. These children are waiting and can be assigned to a qualified family quickly. The special needs program is excellent, with detailed information on each child. The medical records on these children are extremely well done and can be sent to a family considering the adoption of one of these sweet children.
Parent Qualifications: Married couples only may adopt from Korea. Both parents must be between the ages 25-44, no more than 15 years between them. Married for at least three years. No more than one divorce each, with 4 or less children in the family. Couples with no children must be open to either gender. Minimum income: $35,000. Must have a high school education . Parents should have no serious medical conditions and be no more than 30% overweight. Families adopting children with known medical or developmental needs may specify gender, but exceptions are rarely made on the other requirements.
Travel: Children can be escorted to the USA, or a short trip of 4 days may be made.
Timeline: Because a full dossier is not necessary to adopt from Korea, the timeline can be quick. Once paperwork is received, the referral time varies from 5-10 months, though it is shorter for boys. Those adopting special needs children may choose a waiting child once the homestudy is complete.
Tips: To get started, please read the RainbowKids Adoption Guide (left menu) first. The next step is to contact and compare agencies. You may easily do this by using the Contact Wizard on our website. Receiving feedback about agencies from an online discussion group is always helpful as well. Finally, when you bring your child home, be sure and send your story to RainbowKids. We love hearing from proud new families!
