| Overview |
The Colombian adoption program is considered well-established and stable. In recent years, the Colombia program has actively moved towards advocating for their waiting children. An active program for children under 36 months still exists, however, there are numerous older toddlers, school age children and sibling groups who are waiting and ready to be placed.
Children Available:
Children of all ages are available, both healthy and special needs.
Parent Qualifications:
Parent requirements vary by age of parents. Parents should be 25-38 years of age for children 0-35 months; 39-41 years for children 36-59 months; 42-44 years for children 60-83 months; and 45+ for children 84 months (7 years) and older. There is no upper age limit set for waiting children . Single male and female applicants are accepted for children ages 7 and older, or children with special needs of any age. One previous divorce per applicant is acceptable. Couples should be married 1 or more years.
Travel:
Both parents must travel to Colombia (if a couple) for the first two weeks; one parent must remain in country and care for your child/children while the court prepares for adoption finalization; the entire process is generally complete in 4-8 weeks. The time in country is often dependent on the city your child resides in.
Timeline:
A referral of a child comes within 6-10 months after submission of dossier. For those adopting older or waiting children, the time can be greatly decreased.
