Exploring the thoughts Adoptees’ have about birth family and birth culture doesn’t have to be scary! Join Michael Tessier, Youth Programming and Camp Director, as he explores how Adoptees relate to their birth country, what you need to know to help support them, and how you can make the most out of travel. As a co-facilitator for the past two Holt China Family tours, Michael has worked closely with families helping prepare them before travel and process their experience while in country. Here are some of the topics you’ll cover:
• How to talk to your children about birth country, birth family, and birth culture.
• Take a deeper look at why Adoptees express (or don’t express) interest in birth culture education, travel, and birth family search.
• Examine a model of Birth Culture to understand the topics your child is interested in.
• Show the ways Birth Culture and tourism can be helpful and the ways it can be harmful for your child.
• Discuss how you can best support your child and your family to understand, prepare for, and enjoy a birth country tour or trip.
• Time for your questions and answers!
