Overview
Brazil is a country with a stable adoption program. Children are in private and governmental institutions under the supervision of CEJA. The children are either abandoned or the parental rights have been taken away by a court. They are of both genders and usually are of mixed race: European/African/indigenous Indian. Due to the required month-long legth of stay in-country, many people choose not to adopt from Brazil. However, because of this stay, older children adopted from Brazil often do very well in their families because they have had time to adjust and accept their new parents.

Children Available: Though there are infants, most single children are 4 years old, but younger children may be part of a sibling group. Unrelated children can be placed at the same time as a group if they are in the same institution. The adoption of a group (related or unrelated) is considered to be one process if done in the same court.

Parent Qualifications: Brazilian law requires that the adoptive parents are at least 21 years of age and are at least 16 years older than the child(ren). The law does not stipulate an upper age limit. Single adoptive parents have to be at least 25 years old in accordance with US Immigration Law. One of the only countries that allows single men to adopt.

Travel: You will make one trip of over one month to complete the bonding period and adoption and to obtain the US Visa.

Timeline: From the time your dossier is completed until travel is about 3-6 months at the time of this writing. For special needs pre-identified children, the wait is often shorter.
